Biotech Heights at the European High-Level Conference on Biosolutions
On May 13, 2025, Biotech Heights took part in the European High-Level Conference on Biosolutions, hosted by the European Biosolutions Coalition at Concert Noble in Brussels.
This flagship event united over 200 participants from research, startups, scaleups, industry, and policy—solidifying its reputation as one of the most important gatherings for the European biosolutions sector.
Representing Biotech Heights on-site was Josefin Ahlqvist, Project Manager, who shared her reflections on what made the conference both timely and impactful.
“It was a very well-attended and well-structured conference that went straight to the core of what needs to be addressed,” said Josefin. “Above all, the focus was on inefficient permitting processes and the lack of financing for scale-up companies.”
The conference theme—"How will Europe keep pace? Boosting competitiveness with biosolutions"—set the tone for a day of high-level discussion about Europe’s role in the global race for innovation, sustainability, and economic resilience.
In panels moderated by journalist Jacki Davis, speakers explored how biosolutions can drive competitiveness—if the right enablers are in place. However, regulatory barriers and slow administrative processes remain the most urgent hurdles, directly tied to access to finance and ability to scale.
Many voices at the conference advocated for a bold and broad Biotech Act that goes beyond pharmaceuticals, enabling all segments of the biosolutions sector to flourish. Such a framework would clarify regulatory landscapes and open the door to much-needed investments in innovation and infrastructure.
In addition to gaining insights from European and international leaders, Josefin emphasized the value of being physically present at such a pivotal moment for the sector.
“I return home with an expanded network, new perspectives, and a better understanding of how we should move forward—what questions to prioritize and how to approach them in our Nordic context,” she said.
The message from Brussels was clear: Europe cannot afford to wait. Biosolutions are key to delivering on the EU’s sustainability, innovation, and competitiveness goals. But unlocking their full potential requires political will, strategic investment, and regulatory reform.
At Biotech Heights, we are happy to have been part of this important conversation and remain committed to supporting the Nordic region’s role in shaping a future-oriented, innovation-driven biosolutions ecosystem in Europe.
