On September 9, leading voices from government, industry, academia, and finance gathered at the Danish Parliament for a high-level forum on the future of biosolutions in Europe.

The event, hosted by the Danish Chamber of Commerce, Alliance for Biosolutions, DI Biosolutions, Copenhagen University, and several Danish ministries, focused on how to turn Europe’s green growth ambitions into concrete action – particularly through biotechnology.

Biotech Heights attended the event as part of a Nordic innovation delegation, with special interest in the EU’s Biotech Act – a legislative proposal set to define the future regulatory landscape for biotech innovation in Europe.

The forum brought together a wide range of stakeholders: European policymakers, senior representatives from the European Biosolutions Coalition, EFSA & USDA, Innovation agencies, FoodTech investors, and multinational companies such as Novonesis, Arla Food Ingredients and Tetra Pak. Tetra Pak was represented on stage by Marie Sandin, Managing Director of Tetra Pak Sweden.

The discussions centered on:

  • How Europe can compete globally in biotech innovation
  • The urgency of reforming regulatory frameworks for faster market access
  • The need for scale-up infrastructure and public-private partnerships
  • How biotech can contribute to food security, circularity, and climate goals
  • The role of biotech in driving economic growth, competitiveness, and creating new jobs in Europe

Biotech Act: A pivotal opportunity for Europe

One of the key takeaways from the event was the strategic significance of the EU Biotech Act, n now open for public consultations until 10th of Nov. The legislation is expected to accelerate biotech development across sectors – including fermentation-based food systems, a core area for Biotech Heights.

“If we want innovations developed here in Sweden and Denmark to stay and scale within Europe, we must ensure that the Biotech Act delivers faster approval processes, long-term policy visibility, and better access to scale-up infrastructure,” said Lena de Maré, Manager of Biotech Heights.

During the event, Tetra Pak cited Biotech Heights as an example of how regional ecosystems can drive European leadership – if supported by the right policy environment.
