Biotech Heights continues its work on a national roadmap for the Swedish food sector in a new project

The work to develop a national roadmap to increase the use of biotechnology within the Swedish food sector continues. A new project aims to help build collaborative initiatives in Sweden to kick-start the commercialization and scaling up of biotechnology for food.

Åsa Josell, who has led the preparatory work this autumn to develop a national roadmap for biotechnology in the Swedish food sector, continues as project manager:

"We see a strong need to connect stakeholders working on these issues to truly kick-start the use of biotechnology in the food space! We now have the opportunity to drive shared priorities and establish clear pathways for the industry to take innovations all the way to commercial application," says Åsa Josell.

The industry perspectives highlighted during the preparatory roadmap process will serve as a foundation for the project. The initiative is targeted specifically at companies within the food industry, as well as start-ups working within food and biotechnology.

The project will run for two years and is funded by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), in broad collaboration with Region Skåne, Biotech Heights, Livsmedelsakademin, Region Västra Götaland, Region Västernorrland, and RISE.

"It’s fantastic to be able to continue this work. In the long term, we hope it will lead to more and stronger networks, greater trust in innovation, and a shared vision for how we can bring new, sustainable food to the table using biotechnology."

Åsa Josell adds:

“The fact that the project brings together stakeholders from different parts of Sweden also enables us to involve different sectors, process technologies, and target groups.”

The long-term goal of the project is to improve coordination within the field, establish working structures and networks, strengthen trust, and develop a joint national roadmap for industrial biotechnology in the food sector.

About the project: Kraftsamling för industriell bioteknik

The project runs for two years and is funded by the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket), through a broad collaboration involving Region Skåne, Biotech Heights, Livsmedelsakademin, Region Västra Götaland, Region Västernorrland, and RISE.

About the preparatory project

The preparatory project was funded by Vinnova and led by Biotech Heights and Future By Lund, in collaboration with The Good Food Institute, RISE, and Sweden Food Arena.

As part of this work, 46 different organisations were interviewed regarding the challenges and opportunities for increasing the use of biotechnology within the food sector.
